Latin-Flamenco Ensemble (Potingue) Class Description This ensemble class is a forum for musicians interested in creating and performing music with roots in Flamenco, Cuban, and Latin American music, and learning how to use traditional concepts and styles to create contemporary music. The emphasis is on developing advanced arrangements and preparing a cohesive group for public performances. The Latin-Flamenco Ensemble uses the performing name Potingue, which means an unusual mix in Spanish. Winter and spring performances at CMC; other performances in other locations. Ages: Older teens, adults Instrument(s): Flute, clarinet, guitar (nylon string), violin, cello, bass, piano, and percussion (cajón, palmas, bongó, congas, güiro, claves, darbuka, botija, etc.). Style(s) of music studied: Cuban charanga, Flamenco and Latin music. Prerequisites: For advanced students. Proficiency on an instrument, good reading skills (not required for percussionist), ensemble experience, and strong interest in Latin music. Admission with instructors consent. Class size: 10-15 students Location(s), Day(s) and Time(s): Community Music Center Mission District Branch, Wednesdays, 8-10pm Instructor(s): Chus Alonso Tuition: Fall/Winter/Spring Quarter (12 wks.) $270 Summer Quarter (8 wks.) $180 See Financial Aid (Catalog, pg. 3) The goals of the Latin-Flamenco Ensemble class are similar to the goals of the Latin-Flamenco Rhythm Workshop, but the emphasis is on developing advanced arrangements and preparing a cohesive group for public performances. Over the years this class has became a fairly steady group of musicians that get together to improve their understanding of Flamenco and Latin music and to further develop their musical skills. Given the high musicianship of its participants, the group does a good amount of public performances and paid gigs. The group also invites guest artists to produce presentations of special interest. In the old pharmacies the apothecary used to prepare medicines by carefully measuring and mixing the appropriate elements.
